New 'Pork Twister' to be Inaugurated at Pork Patio
Illinois Ag Connection - 07/26/2017

For many, coming to the Pork Patio during the fair has been a tradition for over 30 years. This year, fairgoers can enjoy classics as well as the latest item. A tasty new pork product will be on the menu at the Pork Patio during the 2017 Illinois State Fair.

The "Pork Twister" is a juicy, marinated pork kabob, weaved in bacon. It has a hint of sweetness and flavor from the grill. The Illinois Pork Producers Association allowed social media to join in the naming effort. A single Facebook post asking for name suggestions generated 175 different possibilities.

From there, the final 5 were chosen. In no particular order, the five were:

- Boss Hog; Dawn Sabol of Nokomis, Ill.

- Bacon Weave; Audrey Angus of Piper City, Ill.

- Pork Twister; Carly McGrew of Good Hope, Ill.

- Porknado; Jake Nims of Springfield, Ill.

- Pork Sizzler; Jodi Reyling of Dahlgren, Ill.

Once the final five were announced, an online voting campaign took place. After one week of voting, the overall winner was declared. The "Pork Twister," suggested by Carly McGrew of Good Hope, IL, won by a single vote! Fairgoers will be able to try this tasty kabob at the fair, in nearly two weeks.

The Pork Patio is located in the Illinois Commodities Pavilion across from the Grandstand ---corner of Grandstand Avenue and Avenue of Flags. It will be open daily during the fair on Aug. 10-20 from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and on preview night, Aug. 10, from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

Pork for the Pork Patio is donated by JBS and Smithfield. Each year Illinois pig farmers and industry representatives volunteer their time to serve shifts at the fair.
