Illinois Corn and Soybean Progress Well Ahead of Last Year

There were 5 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Sunday. Statewide, the average temperature was 76.7 degrees, 1.2 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.69 inches, 0.16 inches below normal. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 1 percent very short, 11 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 2 percent very short, 14 percent short, 79 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus.

Corn silking reached 76 percent, compared to 32 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition was rated at 2 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 32 percent excellent.

Soybeans blooming reached 64 percent, compared with 29 percent last year. Soybeans setting pods reached 21 percent. Soybean condition was rated at 3 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 20 percent fair, 47 percent good, and 25 percent excellent.

Sorghum headed reached 4 percent, compared to 6 percent for the 5-year average. Sorghum condition was rated at 14 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 44 percent good, and 9 percent excellent.

Winter wheat harvest was 92 percent complete, compared to the 5-year average of 84 percent.
