Wenning Workshop 'Roots Matter' Aug. 3 in Greensburg
Illinois Ag Connection - 07/25/2016

Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative (CCSI) is hosting a "Roots Matter" Workshop on Cover Crop Diversity and Plot Review on Aug. 3 in Greensburg, Ind., at 1513 N. County Road 80 E. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Highlights will include updates on Roger Wenning's Soil Health Trials, keynote speaker Joel Gruver's (Western Illinois University) information on Diversity of Cover Crop Roots and Their Effects on Soil Health and a Question and Answer Session with Dave Brandt, Roger Wenning and other top farmers.

Wenning started using cover crops in the 1980s to prevent erosion on hilly ground. Today he's using cover crops on more land to not only control erosion, but to build healthy soils, improve water infiltration and manage nutrients.

"Roger's field days summon people from all parts including Canada and Kansas. And for good reason! Roger Wenning has done amazing things with cover crops and no-till on his farm. Last August, he had all 5'4" of me sink a tile probe, to the handle, in a tight soil with a restrictive layer. That had everything to do with Roger's management systems," state Lisa Holscher, Director of CCSI.

Roger Wenning is one of 12 farmers across Indiana hosting strip trials for the Conservation Cropping Systems Initiative (CCSI), a six-year project that explores the environmental, ecological and economic impacts of a variety of conservation practices.

Saddle Butte Ag's Ron Althoff will also be in attendance at this event and will be sharing insight on Cover Crop Plot Preview. The day adjourns with a Cover Crop Plot Walk, including 30 different species and mixes, and a Rain Simulator.

There is no fee to attend this workshop, but registration is required. Contact Holscher at CCSI at 812-890-3631 or ccsi@iaswcd.org.
