Collier and Balasubramanian Named University Professors

Professor of Music David Collier and Professor of Management and Quantitative Methods Elango Balasubramanian have been named University Professors by the Office of the Provost. They will be honored during the Founders Day Convocation on Feb. 21.

Collier joined Illinois State University in 1982 as an instructor. In 2002, he joined the tenure-track faculty, achieving full professor in 2013. Collier's portfolio demonstrates the breadth of his work as a performer and educator. He is an active performing percussionist in numerous orchestras and has performed nationally, internationally, and as a recording artist. He has co-authored Measures of Success, a popular methods book used in band programs across the country. Among his many performance collaborations was his close work with composer David Maslanka to commission and mount the world premiere of David's Book--Concerto for Percussion and Wind Ensemble. An active clinician, Collier has served as an adjudicator for Drum Corps International and is known to be an exceptional teacher, mentor, and academic leader. Collier's personal definition of research includes a wide range of activities--music performance, CD recordings, publications, clinic presentations, adjudications and consulting.

Collier has a sustained record of scholarly and teaching excellence throughout his career at Illinois State University. He was awarded the College of Fine Arts Outstanding Teacher Award in 2012. Active in service, Collier has served on numerous departmental and college committees. He has been an associate director for the Music for All Summer Symposium--a national music symposium--every summer since 1992.

Balasubramanian joined Illinois State University in 1999 as an assistant professor, becoming a full professor in 2008.

Balasubramanian's portfolio demonstrates his work as a scholar and educator. He is well respected in the areas of international business strategy and competition. He has published consistently during his career and has 65 peer-reviewed publications and a scholarly book on the service industry. His journal articles have been cited more than 3,400 times.

Recognized by numerous organizations, Balasubramanian won the University Research Initiative Award in 2002. He serves as the research director for the College of Business and has had several funded grants. He was awarded the Hinderliter Endowed Professorship in 2016-17, the highest scholarly honor in the College of Business. He is a past recipient of the Manahan Family Award for Teaching Excellence in Business and was twice named the Country Insurance & Financial Services Faculty Scholar. He has served on numerous committees at department, college, and university levels including the University Research Committee and the College Research Coordinator Committee.
