Illinois Farmers Preparing for 2015 Season

Farmers and ranchers began preparation for planting this past week; activities included fixing equipment, tilling fields, and applying anhydrous ammonia.

Statewide, precipitation averaged 0.68 inches for the week, 0.11 inches below normal. The average temperature was 51.5 degrees, 4.3 degrees above normal. There were 2.5 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending Sunday. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 7 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 20 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 10 percent short, 79 percent adequate, and 11 percent surplus.

Winter wheat condition was rated at 2 percent very poor, 8 percent poor, 34 percent fair, 49 percent good and 7 percent excellent.

Oats planted reached 9 percent complete, behind both last year and the 5-year average.
