Producers Applaud Senate Farm Bill Conference Report Passage

The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA), on behalf of their 1,600 members, applauded tuesday the passing of a 2018 Farm Bill Conference Report in the Senate.
Illinois was fortunate to have three local representatives on the 2018 National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) Farm Bill Taskforce, which was able to help funnel information from farmers to the Capitol. Ken Maschhoff, current past president of NPPC and pig
farmer from Carlyle; Gary Asay, National Pork Board (NPB) member and pig farmer from Osco; and Jennifer Tirey, executive director of IPPA; were all powerful forces in sharing pork related issues with Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue during his visits
to Illinois for Farm Bill hearings.
We are significantly proud that it includes mandatory funding for animal disease prevention and preparedness. Pork producer groups at the local and national level have been a leading voice for the animal health and disease preparedness funding.
Under the new Farm Bill, the U.S. Department of Agriculture will be able to use funds for a Foot-and-Mouth Disease vaccine bank; for the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN), which provides disease surveillance and diagnostic support;
and for state efforts to prepare for any foreign animal disease outbreak.
"This is a huge win for the pork industry," says Mike Haag, IPPA president and pig farmer from Emington. "IPPA has been proactive in distributing awareness and educational resources to farmers as Foreign Animal Disease, specifically African swine fever,
continues to be a threat for our country."
Illinois pig farmers believe that the ability to respond to foreign animal disease emergencies is critical to safeguarding the well-being of our animals, our economy and the safety of our food supply. We are now urging President Trump's final approval.
